What are

the benefits of German citizenship?

A German citizenship offers the holder a number of benefits, including but not limited to the following:

German citizenship provides enormous opportunities for the holders and their families. German citizens have the right to work, study and live anywhere within the EU, opening the door to a vast job market. This mobility due to European Freedom of Movement allows German citizens to explore career opportunities and start their own businesses across the European continent. That mobility is not restricted to just the European continent, as German citizens have the privilege of holding one of the world’s most powerful passports. German citizens can travel visa-free to a vast number of countries, thus allowing them to benefit from largely hassle-free international experiences.
As a German citizen, you can rest assured that the German state will look after you even in challenging times. The German social benefits system is open to German citizens, allowing them to access health insurance, unemployment benefits, pensions, parental leave, and childcare subsidies.
Your family will greatly benefit from becoming German citizens. German citizenship allows the holder to live, work and study in Germany and the EU without needing to be concerned about visas, residence permits and other such matters. Many expats also experience greater stability, security, and connection to Germany by becoming citizens, allowing them to flourish in the country. Your children will have access to the German education system. The German education system is known globally for its diversity of educational opportunities. Should they decide to go to university, as German and European citizens, they will have access to higher education facilities across Germany and the EU, whether through the Erasmus+ program or by studying full time in any European country.
In cases of naturalization, Germany permits dual citizenship (Israeli/German), enabling individuals to benefit from the rights and privileges of both nations. Also, in other cases, Germany permits dual citizenship with specific countries.
German citizens can seek assistance and protection from the German Government, from German embassies and consulates providing invaluable support in cases of emergencies and crisis.

Am I entitled to receive

German citizenship?

In addition to Nazi victims, their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc. are entitled to receive German citizenship. These new German citizens will not have to give up their previous citizenship(s).

Here are the two main German laws:

Art. 116 II Basic Law: Within the framework of reparations, victims of persecution by the Nazi regime who were deprived of their German nationality on political, racial or religious grounds between 1933-1945 and their descendants are entitled to receive German citizenship.

Section 15 Citizenship Law: Within the framework of reparations also individuals (and their descendants) are entitled to receive German citizenship, if the individual

  • surrendered or lost his German citizenship prior to 1955
  • was excluded from the legal acquisition of German citizenship through marriage, legitimization or collective naturalization of Germans due to their ethnic origin
  • was not naturalized following application or was generally excluded from naturalization
  • surrendered or lost his habitual abode in Germany if this was established prior to 1933 (in case of children, also after this date)

Frequently
asked questions:

Although German citizenship law is changing and German citizenship is becoming more accessible, working with a German citizenship lawyer is still strongly recommended. With changes to the law comes new challenges, particularly in the initial stages following its implementation. Navigating the intricacies of German citizenship law can be daunting, particularly if you are not a native German speaker.

An expert German citizenship lawyer will understand the complexities and nuances of the German legal system, give personalized guidance based on your residency status, nationality, personal history, and unique circumstances, and meticulously manage your citizenship application and required documents. Should complications arise, your lawyer will be there to advocate on your behalf, protect your rights, and liaise with the relevant state authorities.

Above all, working with citizenship lawyers with a deep understanding of German citizenship law will provide you with confidence and peace of mind. If becoming a German citizen is a key priority for you and your family, then allowing experienced lawyers to oversee the process takes away the uncertainty and stress of the issue. It also outsources the administrative process and dealings with the German authorities to the law firm, allowing the applicants to focus on their daily lives rather than on the bureaucratic requirements of obtaining German citizenship. Essentially, they will provide the required reassurance and support you throughout.

As Germany embraces a more inclusive approach to citizenship, the expertise and support of experienced lawyers may be crucial for your case. At Citizenship Germany, we are committed to assisting clients in navigating the new German citizenship law. No, in cases of naturalization there are no skills in German language required.

Your children will have access to the German education system. The German education system is known globally for its diversity of educational opportunities. Should they decide to go to university, as German and European citizens, they will have access to higher education facilities across Germany and the EU, they can take part in the Erasmus+ program and study full time in any European country.
The processing time for a German citizenship can vary. We advise to apply fast since application numbers are rising which will likely lead to longer processing times on the German side.
In addition to receiving German Citizenship through naturalization you may be entitled for German citizenship after 3 years of marriage and 5 years of living in Germany.
